Thumb Print Fun!

My dad’s birthday was earlier this week. The boys wanted to make him something and we came up with paper weights. We took some smooth landscaping stones and painted them with acrylic paint.  But what to put on them? I suggested decopaging some pictures to the rocks but neither of them were thrilled about that. What to do…..then I remembered we had a couple of Ed Emberley’s Thumbprint and Fingerprint books.

IMG_4025

The boys loved this idea.  If you’ve never seen these books they are just adorable! Just using your fingerprints you can make any number of fun things! Animals, people, vehicles, flowers, trees, trains, catarpilars, flowers, the possibilities are endless.  We have both the fingerprint drawing book and an older thumbprint book. These are fun books and really spark your imagination.  Each book gives step by step instructions with a picture for each step.  These are really fun!

IMG_4028

Each page has directions for several different items. There are many different pictures you can make.

IMG_4034

Both boys loved doing this and I know we are going to be doing more in the future. Kaden who just loves Halloween is especially excited to make some of the Halloween themed prints and I have a few ideas for some future gifts.

IMG_4031

Here are the finished paper weights

IMG_4023

This is Justin’s. He made his completely by himself.

The orange man is pop pop, a yellow bird next to it, a pollywog and a fish.

IMG_4022

Kaden’s paper weight. I helped him with the bird at the top and the fish at the bottom but he finished the cowboy on his own while I was helping Justin pick paint.

We used acrylic paints for the fingerprints and a regular black sharpie marker for the drawing parts.  When we were done I sealed them with modge podge.

They wrote on the back of them as well. I thought they turned out cute!

Homemade Laundry Detergent

I have been making my own laundry detergent for quite sometime now. Several years ago I tried making it using the recipe that you have to cook on the stove. I thought it took too long and I was not thrilled about the goopy gel that it ended up being. It worked pretty well but I just did not care for the messiness of it. So I stopped making it. Until this year.  I found an easy recipe for powdered laundry detergent. It is really super easy. It works and will save you money.

What you will need:

IMG_4012

2 cups of bar soap ( you can use Ivory, Fels Naptha, Zote or some other soap if you have a preference. I use Ivory). I have found that one standard bar of Ivory soap equals two cups. I buy my Ivory soap in the dollar store. (I love the dollar store) I buy my borax and washing soda at the grocery store. Sometimes I can find it at Walmart. I just bought some over the weekend. I spent $7.00 total for a box of each.

1 Cup of 20 Mule Team Borax

1 Cup of Super Washing Soda (not to be confused with baking soda)

A food processor

Step one: Grate the bar soap. When I first started to make this laundry soap, I made sure I grated the soap super fine. It took too long. So I stopped and used a more coarse grate. It works. It takes very little time. I make my boys grate it.  Cause that’s how I roll here.

IMG_4014

IMG_4015

The boys had four bars of soap grated in less than 10 minutes. They are fast!

IMG_4016 this is enough soap for four batches of laundry detergent

Step two: dump the soap, borax and washing soda into the food processor. Pulverize into a fine powder. Dump into a lidded container.  There! You’re done! Really! You’re now ready to roll.

IMG_4018 This is what the laundry detergent looks like after it has gone through the food processor.

Step three: do your laundry. You only need two tablespoons per load. Really…I’ve tried it. It works. That’s all you need.  I have had no problems getting the soap do dissolve. I use cold water. Always. There is no undissloved powder or soap residue.

IMG_4019 This is four batches of laundry soap all ready and waiting. This took less than 10 minutes to make.  It will last me almost four months depending on how much laundry I do.  I still have enough borax and washing soda left to make at least four more batches.

Just a little Warning: if you are looking for lots of suds you will not find them. It’s ok. The laundry detergent is working.  You do not need lots of suds to get clean clothes.

Final step: If you like it. Make a double or quadruple batch like I did today. It takes minutes to make. You will be happy you did.

You’re welcome.

DiamondEarrings.org~Review and Giveaway!

diamond-earrings-logo

I’ve always wanted a pair of diamond earrings. The problem is that I cannot afford a decent sized pair. DiamondEarrings.org sent me a pair of their simulated diamond earrings to review.  I was not sure what to expect.  I was thinking they would be very tiny. I was pleasantly surprised. The earrings arrived in a very cute heart shaped velvet type box.  The earrings are Cubic Zirconia, they are a nice size 5mm stud and contain .925 sterling silver.  I really like them! They are not too big and look very much like a diamond with lots of facets.  I wondered if they would hurt my ears as I sometimes have problems with earrings for long periods of time. I am happy to say that I have worn them several times now for an entire day and they have not bothered me at all. They are great for both day and evening wear.  The only con I have with these earrings is that the butterfly clasp is very small and was a bit difficult to get on. Other than that I really like them!

These earrings would make a great inexpensive gift for birthdays, anniversaries and the holidays just around the corner. They would make a great little stocking stuffer!

It was a great weekend to shop at Rite Aid

This week I had some Rite Aid +Up Rewards that were about to expire. You can read my post about Rite Aid and why I love it so much here.  Kaden had a dental appointment on Tues and since we were right across from Rite Aid I decided to stop in. I wanted to roll my +UP reward and bought some Celestial Seasonings Tea since they were offering a $1+Up reward when you purchased the tea. I ended up not using my +UP rewards because of the super nice manager. I was going to buy two teas in one purchase and she suggested I buy them separately since I would get a +UP reward for each transaction.  Which brought my +UP rewards to three. I decided to save them for a future transaction since my OOP (out of pocket) was so small.  As an aside I have to give kudos to the fantastic managers at the Rite Aid stores I frequent. They are wonderful! Helpful, very pleasant and very happy to honor their store policy and answer questions.

Later in the week read on the Hip to Save blog that Rite Aid had  a lot of products reduced to 75% off. I decided to go back.  I had to. Saving money is not only a necessity it has become an addiction.  Really. I think I am going to need an intervention. Seriously.

Everything pictured  below with the exception of a couple of additional boxes of the tea that I forgot to photograph came to $19.99 OOP! I rolled my +UP rewards several times over the weekend and still came away with an additional $3.00 in +UP rewards for next week, plus I am getting $2 back in single check rebates so far for the month of October and I completed and sent for a rebate for a $10 Rite Aid gift card.

I decided for fun to total up what the retail prices were for all of these items. Are you ready? $131.16. Yes that much. I purchased 20 cans of tuna at 75% off making it 47 cents per can. The regular price on the tuna was $1.89. Would I ever purchase tuna for a $1.89 a can? No.  Same with the salmon in the pouch. Normally I would not purchase salmon in a pouch but I thought they would be great for a quick lunch for me when I wanted something different. But at $1.59 per per pouch for less than 3 ounces, well that is just crazy!  At the reduced price of 39 cents a pouch I decided to go for it.  Interestingly enough I have seen many people spend tons of money in CVS and Rite Aid and not bat an eye at the total. Why? When you can get so many items for just pennies out of pocket! My total with the sales/clearance was $54.95 before coupons, +UP rewards and a $5 gift card I had been saving!  Rite Aid has quickly become my favorite store to get deals.

Here is what I purchased:

  • 20 cans of tuna
  • 14 pouches of salmon
  • 1 Listerine
  • 1 Crest
  • 1 Aveeno Conditioner
  • 2 Nexxus Shampoos
  • 1 EOS lip balm
  • 6  boxes Celestial Seasoning tea
  • 2 bags of Starbucks coffee
  • 1 Dawn dish soap
  • 1 Gillette body wash
  • 1 Gillette deodorant
  • 2 packages of colored pencils

In the last picture there are 6 packages of Schick razors. Those were from Walmart and were all free. They sell for $1.97 each and I had $2 coupons for each package! I love FREE!

Justin’s latest solar system creation

Many of you know Justin loves the solar system. With a passion. Rarely does a day go by when he does not create or play with something related to the solar system.  It has been this way since he was two. I really should do a post on   how it all started.  He can build a solar system out of just about anything. He is always thinking up new ideas.

Even though Justin has several solar system sets (he actually wants every one he sees) he still loves to come up with his own creations.  Marbles and tinker toys are what he used to build his latest creation. Larry and I encourage his passion as much as we can. We have numerous books on the solar system both old and new. I think at last count we had over 100 books just on this subject! We stargaze and watch documentaries on the universe, solar system and read books about the early scientists. We’ve taken a couple of trips to the planetarium and I see more of those in our future.  I personally have learned so much about space because of Justin’s passion for space and it is fascinating!

Does your child have a passion for something? Do you encourage it? How do you feed that passion?

Sticky Chicken Recipe

Yesterday I made one of our favorite meals. Sticky Chicken. I cannot believe that I have not posted it here before now. I make it frequently and it is a hit each and every time. It tastes very similar to the rotisserie chicken that you can buy in the grocery store (I actually think it tastes better!)  It slow roasts in the oven all afternoon on 250 and the aroma smells just wonderful!

001

Sticky Chicken

2 tsp salt

2 tsp paprika

1 tsp cayenne pepper

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp thyme

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp black pepper

a large roasting chicken~as big as you can find

1 cup chopped onion

In a small bowl combine all the spices. Remove giblets from the chicken, clean cavity well and pat dry with a paper towel.

Rub the spice mixture into the chicken both inside and out evenly distributed down deep into the skin. Place chicken in a zip top bag, seal and refrigerate over night.

When you are ready to roast chicken, stuff cavity with onions and place in a shallow baking pan. I use the bottom of my broiler pan. Roast uncovered a at 250 degrees for 5 hours.

After the first hour or so, baste chicken occasionally with pan juices. I do this about every half hour or so.  The pan juices will start to caramelize and turn golden brown.  Let chicken rest for 10 minutes before carving.

Who is on your stool?

The King is Coming

This morning in church we sang this song and it has stayed with me this afternoon. I learned this song when I was in choir at the church I grew up in. We travelled all over singing in various churches and we sang a lot of different hymns and church songs.  This is one of my favorites. Not that I can really pick a favorite there are so many beautiful songs to be heard and sung.

The marketplace is empty, no more traffic in the street
All the builder's tools are silent, no more time to harvest wheat
Busy housewives cease their labor, in the courtroom no debate
Work on earth has been suspended as the King comes through the gate

The King is coming, the King is coming
I just heard the trumpet sounding and soon His face I'll see
The King is coming, the King is coming
Praise God, He's coming for me

Happy faces line the hallway, those whose lives have been redeemed
Broken homes He has mended, those from prison He has freed
Little children and the aged hand in hand stand all a-glow
Who were crippled, broken, ruined, clad in garments white as snow

The King is coming, the King is coming
I just heard the trumpet sounding and soon His face I'll see
The King is coming, the King is coming
Praise God, He's coming for me

I can hear the chariot's rumble, I can see the marching throng
And the fury of God's trumpet spells the end of sin and wrong
Regal rolls are now unfolded, heaven's grandstands all in place
Heaven's choir is now assembled, start to sing 'Amazing Grace'

The King is coming, the King is coming
I just heard the trumpet sounding and soon His face I'll see
The King is coming, the King is coming
Praise God, He's coming for me

A 9/11 Video…..

If you watch nothing else today in honor of 9/11/2001. I urge you to watch this video. It is a bit over an hour long but worth your time. (I would not recommend letting your young children watching this)  You will come away changed and realize that we as a country must never forget the tragic events of that day. We must NEVER forget. We need to keep the memories of the fallen alive.

Thank you Debbie for posting about this video.

Remembering 9/11

9-11

I hope you take time today to remember 9/11/2001. I know that day and the events that occurred will stay with me. Always.  Pray for the families who lost loved ones and for the lives that were forever changed.  We will not forget. Thrifty Decor Chick has a very moving post on her blog. Take a few minutes and go read it.

Homemade sidewalk paint

Ok I admit it. This summer has been hot here in NJ. So hot that we have spent more time in the house than out of it. To be honest neither I nor the boys are fond of heat and humidity. I really don’t mind the heat but when you combine the humidity with it, ugh. I just can’t function. Needless to say we spent a lot of time inside in the air conditioning or at the pool.  Now that the weather is turning a bit cooler we have ventured back outside and have started doing some of the things I had wanted to do earlier in the season.

Sunday afternoon I decided to make the boys some sidewalk paint. It was super easy! I followed the directions from the Family Fun site. All you need is corn starch, water and food coloring. You will also need a container to put it in. I used a muffin tin.  I made up two batches and it was enough for 12 muffin tins.  You can choose whatever colors you like. We have neon food coloring and thought that would be the brightest.

The boys loved it! They had so much fun and it was so cheap to make we will be doing it again very soon.

This last picture was the only one that I got of their artwork!  My intention was to go back out after they had done some creating. Unfortunately that never happened.  Using this sidewalk paint led to washing the windows the front of the house and my car.  I happened to look at the kitchen windows and noticed paint spatters all over them.  At first I did not realize what they were. Apparently my darling boys decided to have a paint war! Who needs paintball guns when you can arm yourselves with paint brushes! That is my disclaimer for the day! Use this recipe at your own risk! lol.  Seriously, the paint washed off the boys and the car, house and windows!

Missing Max~Review

51uqA77jMNL__SL500_AA300_

Not long ago I had a chance to listen to Missing Max by by Karen Young and read by Laural Merlington. This is the second book from Oasis Audio that I have had the opportunity to review. Missing Max is the story of six month old baby Max who is kidnapped during Mardi Gras while in the care of his older sister Melanie.  The only thing left behind were his stroller and one shoe.  Panic ensues, the police are called and everyone searches frantically for Max.  The investigation continues and life goes on for Jane and Kyle Madison their relationship becomes strained to the point of breaking. They are brought to the brink of hope when they are called several different times when a child is found that has similar features of Max only to realize that each child is not theirs. Melanie deals with the loss of her baby brother and the strain of her parents seemingly broken relationship with some explosive, jaw dropping news of her own.  Things soon take a downward spiral and everything starts to go wrong.

This is the first book I have read by Karen Young and I enjoyed her writing style. Laural Merlington does an excellent job of narrating this story and the different voices she used for all the characters were excellent.

I thought this book had a very real feel to it. Kidnappings can and do happen everyday. Parents go through the horrors of loosing a child. I cannot imagine a nightmare such as not knowing where your child is. Ms. Young does a great job of relating what the characters are feeling. Their loss, their ability (or inability) to cope with such loss. Their struggle with trying to live as normally as possible and getting through each day. The strain such a traumatic event causes within a marriage and a family. I liked the way this book did not just focus on the mother Jane but gave you a clear understanding of how each family member was effected by the loss of Max.  How the choices we make effect others very deeply. How we can be so wrapped up in our pain that we cannot at times see what another family member is going that they are struggling with guilt and asking those if only questions.

You see Jane as she struggles with God and why something like this can occur.  And yet as she asks these questions she becomes closer to God and ultimately leans on Him.

I found this book an enjoyable and good read. The suspense keeps you reading. The characters and events are believable. You see that the choices you make have lasting and sometimes irreversible consequences.

Disclosure: I received this Missing Max audiobook free of charge in exchange for my review from Oasis Audio. The reviews expressed both in this review and blog are strictly my own. I was not required to write a positive review

Thinking Ahead to Christmas~Tea Cup Bird Feeder

I know I can hear you yelling…Christmas! But it is not even autumn yet or Halloween for that matter (well then someone needs to inform my neighbors who have had their Halloween decorations up for 2 weeks! Oh I’m sorry that is an entirely different topic!) If you are making Christmas gifts or have made them in the past then you know you cannot wait until the last minute to get started! Oh and if you are a family member or good friend you may want to stop reading as I will be making a few of these for Christmas gifts this year! You have been fore warned!

Back in May I made these tea cup bird feeders for my mom and Larry’s grandma (and myself too!). They were a hit. I am thinking these would make a wonderful not to mention inexpensive Christmas gift. I found the tutorial here.  These were so easy to make!  I think for three bird feeders I paid less than $15. Not bad for three gifts.

002

I purchased the tea cups and spoons at the local thrift store. Instead of the copper pipe in the tutorial I used wooden dowels from Lowe’s and spray painted them with copper colored spray paint, giving them a copper colored look for a fraction of the price of the copper pipe.  The dowels were about $2 each. I did purchase copper caps that go under the saucer so you can attach the tea cup to the pole also came from Lowe’s. Just make sure that your dowel and cap are the same size so they will fit together.

095

I really like this one!

091

090

The boys got to help put up Great Mom Mom’s tea cup bird feeder! It looks so cute out in her yard.  If you are interested in making these keep your eyes peeled for some tea cups at the thrift store, yard sales, Salvation Army or Goodwill. I really like to purposely mismatch the cups and saucers.

Are you making any Christmas gifts this year? If you are what are you making? Please share in the comments. I’d love some new ideas!
