Children’s Bible Hour Ministries

I had the opportunity to review four books from Children’s Bible Hour Ministries.(CBH)  This is a company I was unfamiliar with.  CBH has been around for over 65 years.  They produce radio dramas, print materials and web base material to teach children word of Jesus Christ.

The books I received are based on the CBH’s radio scripts.  These are the Season of Faith series of books.  Each book is based on a season of faith.

Spring: This is a time when people experience new life in Christ. Faith develops and Christians begin to share the Salvation message with others.

Summer: The season when faith grows under God’s love and care. Fruit is witnessed and triumphs are gained through applying His Word and striving to be the best we can be in Christ.

Autumn: Times of struggle and temptation, peer pressure, making mistakes, and scary transitions happen during this season. Even though it might seem like nothing good can come from this time, God has promised us He will be there. He will teach us how to forgive and then grow in grace.

Winter: This season is the most difficult. Deep struggles, mourning, trying to make it through difficult times, or the death of a loved one can pull us away from God. He teaches us to lean on Him for comfort and peace.

These are soft cover  illustrated books  with lovely color pictures.  Each book also includes an audio CD read by Uncle Charlie that your child can listen to while following along with the stories. The CD prompts you when to turn the page as you follow along.  The books can be purchased for $10 each plus shipping.  For a limited time (thru April 15th) if you purchase the set of four books you can get free shipping by using the code FREESHIPAPR15.

You Can't Come In~Adam and his new friend Zack decide to build a tree fort one warm summer day. After zooming down a hill and falling into a muddy pond, Zack asks Adam about going to church and salvation. Will Adam be able to explain his faith to Zack?

70_cover

Seventy Times Seven~Batter up! When Brad accidentally breaks the ice cream shop’s sign, the owner forgives Brad. But when his best friend Doug ruins Brad’s favorite baseball cap, will he be able to forgive Doug?

bravestorm_cover

Braving the Storm~When Thomás moves away from his neighborhood and into a mobile home in his grandparents’ backyard, he misses his friends. There’s nothing to do around the apple orchard with no friends, his dad works a lot, and his little brother was hurt in an accident. All his sister wants to do is play with her dolls. Will Thomás be able to rely on God to get through the difficult times?

There are discussion questions that you can use for each book that can be found here.

At the back of each book there is an explanation and Bible verses to receive  Jesus as your Savior.

What we thought: We really liked these books. They are well written and are easy to understand. Justin loved them and has listened to them several times.  He told me that they helped him understand more about Jesus and how much He loves us and wants us to love him. These books will have a place on our book shelves.

Justin says:   In the book  You Can’t Come In, the little boys mother told him he could not come the house  because he was dirty just like when when we are dirty with sin  and God took away our sin  because Jesus died on the cross and made us clean.

Happy 5th Birthday Kaden!

Today my baby is 5! I cannot believe it where have the last five years gone? I have no more babies in  the  house!

 465005660_photo__46

Five years ago today in Korea a sweet little boy was born. Five years ago today little did we know the joy that was awaiting us!

465027269_photo__156

You make our lives brighter! Our days are happier and full of laughter!  You have grown so much in the past year.  You are smart and quick to learn. You have a love for flowers, worms,  ladybugs and cowboys and baking and cooking! You always want to help out. I cannot be in the kitchen without you asking to help me cook or bake something. You love to do dangerous things that frighten me! Jumping off of the top bunk bed! You have no fear except of most bugs.

 466585081_photo__56

Everyday you bring me a flower to put in a vase. You love to look for those worms under the bricks in the backyard and you are always collecting the ladybugs that get in the house.

639998442_picture_011

You love to hug and cuddle and tell us you love us!We love you! You always have a boo boo and need a band aid. I think I should buy stock in band aids!

740861989_kade We love to hear you sing those Queen songs you love so! Although you always stop singing if you know we are watching you!

739975511_picture_or_video_430

I love to see your excitement each day when daddy comes home! You are so excited to see him!

640544353_copy

We love that you cannot stand chefs and want to be a cook.  You do not like chefs because of the hat they wear!

765203694_040

We love your ideas and silly games you come up with. How you love to do whatever Justin does. Sometimes encouraging Justin to do things he shouldn’t. Like jump off those beds!

071   We love the way you wink at us and when we don’t wink back you say “I’m winking at you, you are supposed to wink back”.

726926076_picture_or_video_459

We also pray for your birth family. Today somewhere in Korea your birth family is thinking of you. We pray for them and pray that they would know how happy you are and what a wonderful boy you are and how thankful we are that they chose life for you.

We love you! Happy 5th Birthday Kaden. God has blessed our lives to have you as part of our family!

Artistic Pursuits~Review

08cover%20K-3%201

My boys love to draw and create.  They are always creating something either by drawing, using play dough or paint. We have done some limited art in our school studies but I have never used an art curriculum until now.

I was given an opportunity to review Artistic Pursuits. I chose grade K-3 book one. This level is an introduction to the visual arts. It is available for $42.95.

There are 32 lessons with projects in this level. The book is broken down into the following three sections.

  • What Artists Do
  • What Artists See
  • Where We Find Art

The lessons are laid out so that you cover one lesson per week.   In each lesson there is an exercise, some form  of art to study ( a painting, pottery, and more)  and a project to complete.

You will need to purchase the following art supplies if you do not already have them:

  • Ebony pencil
  • Vinyl or Pink Pearl eraser
  • Small set of soft pastels
  • Small set of oil pastels
  • Sketch or drawing paper pad
  • Set of 10-15 Watercolor Crayons
  • #8 round watercolor brush that comes to a point
  • Watercolor paper pad
  • heavy weight construction paper, assorted colors
  • package of tissue paper assorted colors
  • scissors
  • 4-5 lb gray self hardening clay

Be sure to go and look at the sample lessons.

This was a lesson in drawing something with an Ebony pencil.

074

066  Their completed project.

078

Justin drew a scene with marbles, our cat Jupiter and a self portrait of himself dressed as Abraham Lincoln.

079 Kaden drew scene with a house, people a tiger with the sun shining down.

The  second lesson the boys did required using watercolor paper and watercolor crayons and a brush and water. They were amazed that they could change the feel and texture of their artwork.

097 This is a picture of the earth with the moon rising and behind it the rest of the solar system.

095 This is a beach scene. Can you see the water with the surround beach?

What we thought: This is a fantastic art curriculum! The book is laid out very well and the lessons are fun and very easy to follow. The boys love using our new art supplies and getting to try different mediums.  I love being able to incorporate art appreciation with a project. The lessons are laid out that you can do one lesson per week and then continue to practice that particular lesson throughout the week if you choose.

I will say that buying the art supplies is a bit pricey. I spent close to $50 on our supplies. However having good art supplies is a must and you can definitely tell a huge difference between lesser quality art supplies and the better ones.  Justin commented on how much nicer the paint brush was than the ones we typically use.  A way around spending so much at once is to buy just a few items at a time and if you shop at one of the craft stores you can use a 40%-50% off coupon and watch the sales to help you out.  Also once you buy your supplies you will be set for a while.

I would highly recommend Artistic Pursuits.  This is a wonderful curriculum and a fun way to introduce art to your students.

Be sure to visit my crewmates to see what they are saying about Artistic Pursuits.

Swagbucks

Is your budget tight? Do you have to watch where every penny goes? Do you wish you had a little fun money in your budget? If you answered yes to all of these questions. I may have a solution for you.   I earn a little extra each month.

We have to stretch our money these days, actually I guess most of us do, right? Do you have to watch where every penny goes? Do you wish you had a little extra here and there to buy something you otherwise may not. Maybe you are even saving for something you really need.  If you are looking for a way to have a little extra maybe this will work for you.

I earn gift cards by searching the web using Swagbucks.

Swagbucks is a search engine powered by google and ask.com  that you can use to earn points. When you search using their search box or toolbar  (you can download the toolbar right  to your computer) you earn points.  When you have earned enough points you can redeem them for prizes. For example a $5 Amazon card is 450 points. You can earn 10+ points per search. The points are random and you never know when are going to get them. I will say that I earn points daily, sometimes I earn 10 points sometimes more.

You can redeem your points for gift cards to places like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Red Envelope, Resturant.com, Paypal, Target, Lowe’s, Disney, Apple, JC Penny and much more. These are  just what is available in the gift card section. There are also other prizes you can redeem your points for, apparel, books, movies and TV and much more.

Other ways you can earn points with Swagbucks you can shop through their site or you can fill out the special offers  and also earn Swagbucks

If you download the Swagbucks toolbar you will be able to search directly from the toolbar and also will be awarded random points just for using the toolbar.

Since I have been using Swagbucks I have earned $175 in Amazon gift cards (that is 35 five dollar gift cards) $20 in Barnes and Noble gift cards, one Alice.com gift card, 2 movie passes and $20 to paypal.  I currently am waiting for 5 additional Amazon $5 cards and a $10 Barnes and Noble card. A couple of days ago I used my Amazon cards to purchase a new camera lens for my Canon Rebel.

You can also earn additional points by getting referrals. If someone signs up for Swagbucks using your referral link when they earn points you will also earn points up to 1000 points. So yes if you sign up using any of the links in this post I will earn points as well.   If you sign up for Swagbucks you will receive 30 swagbucks to start you off!

I have been a member for about a year now and have been very happy with them. They never send any spam either. I generally choose Amazon cards and what I like about that is you can save all of your Amazon cards in your Amazon account until you are ready to spend them.

Stay tuned. I’m going to be talking about a couple of other things I do to earn gift cards.

disclaimer: I received no compensation  for this post. I will receive Swagbuck points if anyone signs up with my referral link. The opinions expressed above are my own.

Homeschool Library Builder

home_school_library_builder

In our home we love books. We have several book cases of books~currently we have five that are full to overflowing. We read daily.  We are always on the look out for quality books.  Have you purchased a new book recently? Well they are not cheap!

If you are regular reader of my blog you know that we are big library supporters.  Sometimes though I cannot find what I want at our local library nor at the other 10+ libraries that are connected with ours. It can be very frustrating. Especially when I want a particular book and I find it is not available. Before I go out and pay full price for a new book I try to find it used.

One of my favorite places to look first is Homeschool Library Builder,   a Christian family-run book business dedicated to providing great literature at affordable prices. The owners of Homeschool Library Builder are Julie Huffman and Gayla Weatherford are homeschool mom’s themselves and two of the sweetest ladies.

Homeschool Library Builder has quite a variety of books available. They offer quality books that are in excellent used condition and out of print books to many books that are brand new remainder books.

They offer books by some of the popular homeschooling curriculum:  Five in a Row, Sonlight, Beautiful Feet, Veritas Press, Tapestry of Grace, Ambleside Online, and others. One of the features I like is they have a search by curriculum page that allows you to search for books for the particular curriculum you are using.

You can become a member for free. Why become a member? They have a book points membership rewards program where you earn points for the books you purchase. For every dollar you spend you earn one point. When you reach 15 points you earn one dollar. The more books you buy the more points you earn. So you are saving money on books (their prices are great!) and you are earning more points on future books!

What we thought: I have been a member of Homeschool Library Builder for a couple of years now and I love them.  Every single book I have purchased has been in either new or excellent used condition. I have never received a book that was in less than great condition. I have earned book points I have used to earn additional books.  They have great sales.  Their customer service is fantastic.

Now I cannot promise you that they will always have what you are looking for but they have a wonderful selection and if you check back often you just might find what you are looking for and save a bit of money at the same time.

Homeschool Library Builder also has a share the savings program so If you do decide to become a member and purchase from them, I’d love for you to use my name Michele Gerrells as a referral. I’ll earn some book points I can put towards some future books.

Be sure to visit the TOS Crew blog to read more reviews of Homeschool Library Builder.

What’s in the Bible? Review and Giveaway!

WebBanner_300x250_WITB[1]

Do you know what’s in the Bible? Do your children want to learn more about the Bible? Phil Vischer the creator of Veggie Tales has come out with a new DVD series titled What’s in the Bible? In total there will be 13 DVD’s in this series covering the entire Bible. I was given episodes 1 In the Beginning and episode 2 Let My People Go to review. Each video runs approximately 1 hour.

If you are expecting to see the familiar Veggie Tales characters in this series you will be disappointed. These characters are completely new and different. In this series you will meet Michael a little boy who is watching these DVD’s while riding in the car with his mother. Clive and Ian who are brothers, Chuck Wagon a singing guitar playing cowboy and a few other characters.

Below are just a few of the many topics covered on these DVD’s:

  • What is the Bible
  • How Many books are in the Bible
  • Why are there more books in the Catholic Bible
  • What is a covenant
  • Jesus lineage
  • Who wrote the Bible
  • Sin and Redemption
  • How many days it took God to create the world
  • How long it took to write the Bible
  • Church history and much more….

Here is a sneak peak:

What we thought: The boys and I watched these together. We found them fun and engaging. The characters great! There is a lot of humor interspersed throughout the DVD’s. More importantly we all learned a lot about the Bible. I learned many things I did not know such as what patriarchal history is. We are very interested in the rest of this series when they are released!

The first two DVD’s are available at Tyndale House. They are also available at your local Christian bookstore and from the What’s in the Bible website you will receive a bonus CD if you among the first 500 who order. You can also find them at Christianbook.com

Now for the giveaway! (this is my very first giveaway!) Would you like to receive a copy of episode 1 What’s in the Bible or episode 2 Let My People Go. Tyndale has graciously given me two certificates for each one of these DVD’s to giveaway to two of my blog readers. Kaden

Lately Kaden has had me cracking up with some of the things he says.  The other day he came into the room and this is the conversation that ensued.

Kaden: Mom do you know that you are a woman?

Me: why yes I do.

Kaden: Mom do you know that women are girls?

Me: I sure do!

Me: So what do they call men?

Kaden: Oh they’re just people!

Today we were driving along and we saw a sign similar to this one.

1598R-167068

From the back seat I hear Kaden say.  That sign means no ducks allowed! I was just falling out laughing!  I explained to him that the sign really meant that we needed to be careful because it was a duck crossing area.  He said, nope it means no ducks allowed!  Ahhhh I love the thinking of almost 5 year olds!

Graphic Toolbox~Review

box

I received Graphic Toolbox from Great Software Tools  to review for the TOS Homeschool Crew.

Graphic Toolbox is a multipurpose graphic software program in which you can create and control graphics.

Here are just a few of the features you will find with this program:

  • create greeting cards
  • change the tonal color in photos
  • add borders, ribbons and other graphics to your photos
  • change colors in clip art images
  • create your own graphics
  • manipulate photos
  • make your own business fliers
  • combine and customize your photos
  • and much more…

The cost for this software is $149.00 for one license. You can get additional licenses at a discount.

Graphic Toolbox offers tutorials to guide you though their program.  They also offer personalized training sessions for $65 per hour.

What we thought: I was unable to use this on my computer as it is currently not compatible for Windows 7.  Be sure to  check to see the system requirements found here. This is a very large download and you will want to make sure your system meets the requirements.   This software does appear to have a high learning curve but if you are very into computers and graphic design this may be something you would consider purchasing.  You can get a free 30 day trial. So you can decide before you buy.

You can also look over the Graphic Toolbox manual found here.

Be sure to visit the TOS Homeschool Crew to see more reviews of Graphic Toolbox.

All About Spelling Beehive Reader 1~Review

8

As part of the TOS Crew I was given a copy of Beehive Reader 1.   This is a reader written my Marie Ripple from All About Spelling.  It sells for $19.95 and is available in hardback form.   This reader correlates directly with All About Spelling Level 1.

untitled7

There are 10 stories in this reader. Some of the stories you will find in this book are:

  • At the Pond
  • The Nap
  • At Camp
  • The Bat and King Sam
  • Cobweb the Cat
6

You can read 6 samples from the stories by clicking on the tabs under Look Inside This Book section here.

 untitled8

What we thought: This is a beautiful, quality hardback book. The illustrations done in black and white ink drawings are stunning.  This is a high quality book for a beginning reader.   I love that is correlates with All About Spelling so easily. The stories are engaging and fun.  This is a stand alone reader that can be used by with or without All About Spelling if you are using a different program.

 untitled9

I recently found out that Marie Rippel will have four readers out by the end of 2010 along with a reading program: All About Reading and a teachers manual.

In search of the perfect waffle recipe

I’ve been searching oh yes I have, high and low far and wide for the perfect waffle recipe. All four of us like waffles but there are two waffle lovers in this house Kaden and yours truly.  I have tried several and I just did not like the taste.  Finally I think I have come upon the one recipe I think is a keeper.

I found the original recipe at Allrecipes one of my favorite recipe sites.  It is a great basic recipe but I decided to tweak it.  So far we love these. They come out golden brown and crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

The only thing I am not crazy about is that they tend to burn slightly if you leave them in the toaster too long. I like to cook up a big batch of waffles and freeze for busy mornings. If you do not toast them long enough they are not hot enough (at least for me).   I have tried microwaving them frozen but I do not care for them that way as they get rubbery.

Waffles

  • 2 cups all—purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 6 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs, separated
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1-2 teaspoons vanilla

Preheat waffle iron. In a large bowl mix together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.  Stir in milk egg yolks, vanilla and vegetable oil.

In a separate bowl beat egg whites into stiff peaks. Fold in egg whites with a spatula.

Spray preheated waffle iron with non stick cooking spray. add a scant 1/3 cup onto waffle iron. Cook until golden brown.

This recipe doubles easily and freezes beautifully.

Please pass the lion

image_sci_animal001

Last night we were shopping at BJ’s. As we walked through the meat department, Justin started reading the labels on the various meats.  All of a sudden he got very excited and wow, I didn’t know they sold lion here, can we get some mom please, I’ve never tasted lion. (can you tell Justin is an adventurous eater)

I am thinking lion? What do you mean lion? Justin says it is right here mom look pork lion! Can we pleeeeaaase get some? I am looking and I do not see anything that says lion on it.  Finally I notice he is pointing to the pork LOIN.  I explained that they were not selling lion and that pork loin comes from pigs.  He was pretty disappointed and I tried my best not to laugh….really I did. ROFL!

Math Mammoth~Review

untitled1

As a member of the TOS Crew this past year there has been a plethora of math products on the schedule.  Math Mammoth is yet another that I had the opportunity to review.

Math Mammoth has several different series labeled by color. We chose to review the Light Blue Series  Grade 2 A & B. These are full curriculum and contain two student worktexts (A &B) as well as answer keys, tests, cumulative reviews, and an additional worksheet maker. untitled3

Prices are $29.70 for both A & B or $15.50 for each, if you only want to use one of the worktexts.

Here is a list of some of the concepts covered in this series:

  • Halves, fourths and other parts
  • Clock
  • Addition and Subtraction facts
  • Carrying
  • Borrowing
  • Coins
  • Geometry
  • Fractions
  • Place Value to 1000
  • Mental Math
  • Measuring
  • Multiplication

What we thought: This is a wonderful math curriculum.  The text is easy to read and easy to understand for both me as the teacher and to Justin as the student. The concepts are laid out in an easy to understand manner.  The pages are colorful and inviting, something Justin really loved. Not just boring black and white pages.

I really liked that there are also resource links (you do need internet access for these) at the beginning of each chapter. For example in the chapter on Clock, there are 14 links to various clocks, clock games, etc. To help your student master telling time.  You do not have to use any or all of these resources but I like that they are available and I do not have to spend time hunting them down on the internet.

This curriculum is very affordable.  You can download an entire curriculum as I did using the light blue series or just choose a particular concept you want teach and purchase that download.  Once again using Clock as an example, because we are using the full curriculum there is a chapter on clock work in section A of the light blue series. However if you just want to work on Clock with your student you could purchase just Clock in the blue series for $3.50.

We really love Math Mammoth and would recommend it as a great stand alone curriculum or a supplement to your math teaching.

You can sign up for sample pages  and find placement tests (if you are not sure where  you should start with your student).
