Oh hi there! You startled me! I just returned from the 19th century. Western Ohio to be exact! There was rattlesnake, a terrible horse and buggy accident, secrets, sadness, slave hunters, secret hiding places, fear, love ,the underground railroad, unexpected friends, and lots of adventure. At least it felt like I was there after reading Sarah's Wish.
Sarah's Wish, written by author Jim Baumgardner, is the fictional story of a girl named Sarah from Western Ohio just a few years before the start of the Civil War. Sarah has a secret she promised her mother she would keep. Sarah has to deliver the "packages" to their next destination no matter what. Sarah is not sure who she can trust and who her friends are. Can she tell anyone her secret? Sarah also has a wish.....a family to call her own.
This is a wonderful book for both children and adults. It gives us a glimpse of what it might have been like during this difficult time in history, when slavery was legal. How many folks put themselves and their families at risk to help others by smuggling slaves through the underground railroad. There are some wonderful characters in this story Sarah and Granny were our favorites.
When you purchase Sarah's Wish there is a code for a free download of the Sarah's Wish audiobook found in the back of the book. We listened to the audiobook and I must say that the story teller did an excellent job. There are two additional books in this series Sarah's Promise and Sarah's Escape.
Mr. Baumgardner is the grandfather to nine grandchildren who are homeschooled. I have received several emails from him and is very witty and engaging. He personally autographs every one of his books. Here is how he describes the Sarah books:
The books have been referred to as Christian fiction. I prefer to describe them as Young Adult fiction written by a Christian author. Sarah’s faith is important to her and she lives by it, but the books do not try to convert the reader to anything. The stories do teach Christian principals of living a good life and treating others as you would have them treat you. I do not ignore the evil in the world and Sarah must confront it at times just as we all do.
Sarah's Wish $10.99
Sarah's Promise $13.50
Sarah's Escape $17.50
Please be sure to visit Sarah Books to read excerpts from all three books.

One more thing....this book is wonderful for both boys and girls. It is not a girly book at all. More a living history book. It would make an excellent jumping off point for a unit study.
