Calendar Time

We have calender time at our house in the mornings before we start school.
This year I decided to make up an interactive calender for the boys to use to learn the days of the week, month, year etc.

Over the summer I picked up some of these pocket charts from the Dollar Spot at Target. They are the perfect size for making a calendar. The pockets shallow and perfect to hold the dates, month and year.

For the calendar I used downloads from two different sources. For the months of the year I used the Teacher's Book Bag calendar card freebie found here. For the days of the week and dates I used the freebie from Maybe Montessori found in this post.

We have a very small home and I could not figure out where to hang out calendar. I wanted it in my kitchen and I have very little wall space in there, so I decided on the refrigerator. I was using two metal magnet backed hooks. The pocket chart has two grommets at the top for hanging. The only problem with this was that it kept moving all over. I finally decided to take it off the hooks and glue magnets to the back.

I had magnet strip that comes on a roll. It is peel and stick, but I decided to use my trusty hot glue gun to make sure the magnets stay in place. I simply glued them along all sides around the back of the pocket chart.

Here is the finished calendar.(you can click on the picture to see it closer) I printed up two sets of the yesterday, today, tomorrow printouts to put behind both the day and the date. I love that there are also cute printouts for different holidays, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, July 4th and hearts for things like anniversaries and birthdays. (the 18th is Larry's birthday) There are also weather printouts. I have not printed the holidays/weather on transparency as is suggested in the tutorial since I didn't have any on hand.

The only thing I may add is to sew the pockets to fit the cards so they do not move around as much.

I love the way it turned out and the boys help change the calendar each day!

Very nice. I have calendar pieces I made years and years ago for the kiddos-then laminated them and velcro them onto the calendar board I picked up at a teacher's store. It works really nice. I love the yesterday, today and tomorrow cards-I am going to make those for us! Thanks for the idea!
