Over the weekend we watched a wonderful movie, Miss Potter. It is about the life of Beatrix Potter the writer and illustrator of the classic story Peter Rabbit. It is a delightful movie! Miss Potter is portrayed by Renee Zellweger. If you are not familiar with the story, Beatrix Potter was born into a wealthy family and was a wonderful artist and writer. She decided to publish a book much to the disappointment of her very high society mother. Miss Potter ends up falling in love with her publisher, which was considered disgraceful for a woman of her stature in those days. She agrees to her parents wishes that she wait a summer and keep their engagement a secret. While vacationing her fiancee falls ill and ultimately dies.....it does have a very happy ending though.
The movie was fun and gave us a glimpse of life in early 1900 England. Miss Potter was truly ahead of her time and stood up for what she wanted, created her own wealth and did something she loved, inspite of disapproval from her mother.
Last year we did a unit study on Peter Rabbit and Beatrix Potter and my boys love this story. We have the original story~there are other versions with different illustrators, but we love the original. After watching this, now Justin wants to read more of her stories.
